Keynote Speakers Biographies:

Robert Sallis, MD, FACSM: Exercise is Medicine
Dr. Robert Sallis is Co-Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship and on the Administrative Faculty of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, CA. He also serves as research chairman for the medical center. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the UCR/UCLA Biomedical Sciences Program and the head team physician at Pomona College.
Dr. Sallis has lectured across the country on a variety of primary care sports medicine topics. He currently serves as President of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and as Co-Chairman of Team Physician Course and the Ironman Sports Medicine Conference and on the planning committee for the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP) Sports Medicine Review Course.
Dr. Sallis serves as editor-in-chief of the journal Current Sports Medicine Reports, and as associate editor-in-chief of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Physician and Sportsmedicine, the American Journal of Medicine & Sports, the Yearbook of Sports Medicine, and Sports Medicine Alert.
He has authored over 25 scientific papers, as well as numerous research abstracts, book chapters, and magazine articles. He has also edited two books, ACSM's Essentials of Sports Medicine and Sports Medicine Review. Research interests include sports-related head injuries, injury patterns, and dietary supplements.
Dr. Sallis is a fellow of both the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He has served on the Board of Trustees and Administrative Council for the ACSM, and is active on the Publications, CME, and Credentials committees.
Dr. Sallis received his bachelor's degree from the Air Force Academy, where he played intercollegiate basketball. He went to medical school at Texas A&M University, and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Kaiser Permanente. He is board certified in Family Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine.

Eduardo J Sanchez, MD, MPH; Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas
Eduardo J. Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H. currently serves as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for BlueCross BlueShield of Texas. Before joining BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, he served as Director of the Institute for Health Policy at The University of Texas (UT) School of Public Health. Prior to that, Dr. Sanchez served as Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services from 2004 to 2006 and the Texas Department of Health from 2001 to 2004. Trained as a family physician, Dr. Sanchez practiced family medicine in Austin from 1992 to 2001. Most of that time, he worked in settings that provide medical care to the uninsured and underinsured. He served as the city/county local health officer and Chief Medical Officer for the Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services Department from 1994 to 1998. Dr. Sanchez received his M.D. in 1988 from the UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He was a member of the American Medical Student Association and did a summer health preceptorship in Brownsville, Texas on the United States – Mexico border. He holds an M.P.H. from the UT School of Public Health, San Antonio Branch; an M.S. in biomedical engineering from Duke University, and a B.S. in biomedical engineering and B.A. in chemistry from Boston University. Dr. Sanchez is serving as Chair of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and as Chair of the National Commission on Prevention Priorities (NCPP), a nationally-recognized entity that uses evidence-based methods to assess the value of preventive services that protect and improve health. Dr. Sanchez served on the IOM Committee on Progress in Preventing Childhood Obesity, and he is currently serving as co-chair of the National Governors' Association Childhood Obesity Advisory Council and as a member of the IOM Standing Committee on Childhood Obesity.
